Identify a Circuit Breaker in 5 Easy Steps!!!
1. Locate the label. Most breakers have labels with a 7-8 digit and letter code that is the catalog number (ex: BAB1060). The code is breaker specific and can be used for instant identification. Another key piece of information found on the label is the manufacturer’s name, and breaker type. These are vital pieces of information necessary to correctly identify your breaker if the catalog number is no longer legible.
2. Number of Poles. If no label is in sight then the first step to identification is to determine the number of poles on the breaker. Poles can best be described by the number of connections the breaker can make. The connections are usually silver and normally located away from the switch on the top of the breaker. The breaker pictured here has 3 locations on each end that are available for connections, and therefore the breaker has 3 poles.
3. Ampere Rating. On most breakers the ampere rating is very easy to spot. It is usually etched in and painted on the switch and/or on the label. The breaker pictured here has an ampere rating of 40 amps.
4. Voltage Rating. Voltage ratings are normally written on the top face of the breaker on the label near the catalog number or type of breaker. This rating may not be very well labeled, but common voltage ratings are 120, 240, 480 and 600. The voltage can also be determined by the panel that the breaker is mounted in.
